{"id":87,"date":"2008-06-24T20:20:01","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T02:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.thetucker.com\/younguns\/zantac-a-blessing-and-a-curse-87"},"modified":"2008-06-24T20:20:01","modified_gmt":"2008-06-25T02:20:01","slug":"zantac-a-blessing-and-a-curse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.thetucker.com\/daniel\/zantac-a-blessing-and-a-curse-87","title":{"rendered":"Zantac: a blessing and a curse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel has infant reflux.\u00a0 This usually begins to manafest itself around 2 weeks of age.\u00a0 We knew he had it because he would get very upset after eating.\u00a0 Soon we could smell the acid on his breath.\u00a0 We could tell from his crying that he was in pain.<\/p>\n<p>So at three weeks of age, Daniel started on Zantac, and it has been both a blessing and a curse.<\/p>\n<p>The blessing &#8211; the Zantac reduces the acid in his stomach so that his reflux doesn&#8217;t burn and hurt anymore.\u00a0 He still has the reflux.\u00a0 Because of the reflux we keep him upright for at least 20 to 30 minutes after feeding him.\u00a0 We also feed him somewhat elevated.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t lay him on his back until at least an hour after he eats or longer.\u00a0 The reflux also causes him to choke easily, so we have to be careful feeding him.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had to change to premie nipples because the infant nipples flowed too quickly and tended to get him choked frequently.<\/p>\n<p>The curse &#8211; there are several.\u00a0 Since Zantac reduces stomach acid, it slows his whole system down.\u00a0 He has stomach discomfort and gas because everything is just slow and backed up.\u00a0 Zantac also probably makes him a bit edgy and nervous.\u00a0 We also have to give him the Zantac twice a day, sometime between an hour and twenty minutes before he eats.\u00a0That&#8217;s the part that resulted in this photo.\u00a0 When I gave him the Zantac he decided it was time to eat and he had to wait twenty minutes.\u00a0 He got really upset and is trying to comfort himself by sucking his thumb.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" src=\"\/younguns\/files\/thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel sucking his thumb\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel has infant reflux.\u00a0 This usually begins to manafest itself around 2 weeks of age.\u00a0 We knew he had it because he would get very upset after eating.\u00a0 Soon we could smell the acid on his breath.\u00a0 We could tell from his crying that he was in pain.
