\"\"<\/a>This little hat is made to coordinate with my Train Track Baby Blanket<\/a>. Instructions are given in several sizes. The sleepers are formed by elongated stitches that are picked up on the opposite rail.<\/p>\n

Sizes:<\/strong>
\nPreemie – 10″ circumference, 5.5″ high
\nNewborn – 12″ circumference, 6″ high
\n6 month – 14″ circumference, 7″ high
\n12 month – 16″ circumference, 7.5″ high
\nToddler – 18″ circumference, 8″ high<\/p>\n

Gauge:<\/strong>
\n18 stitches and\u00a024 rows = 4 inches in stockinette<\/p>\n

Materials:<\/strong>
\n0.7 to\u00a03 oz (40 to\u00a0150 yards) of soft worsted weight yarn
\nSize\u00a08 (5 mm) 47″ circular needle (for magic loop<\/a>) or<\/strong><\/em> set of size\u00a08 (5 mm) double pointed needles
\nYarn needle<\/p>\n

Colors:<\/strong><\/p>\n

At least two colors are needed to make the hat, but up to four can be used. The example has three.<\/p>\n

Abbreviations:<\/strong>
\nk = knit
\np = purl
\nk2tog = knit two together
\nssk = slip one knitwise, slip one knitwise, insert left needle into front of both slipped stitches and knit
\nkw4w – knit with four wraps: insert right needle to knit, but wrap yarn four times and pull through
\ndws – drop with slip: slip the stitch with the extra wraps purlwise, dropping the extra wraps. There will be a single elongated stitch.
\nspw – slip purlwise<\/p>\n

Pattern:
\n<\/strong>Start with color for ribbing and below track.
\nPreemie – Cast on 48
\nNewborn – Cast on 56
\n6 month – Cast on 64
\n12 month – Cast on 72
\nToddler – Cast on 80<\/p>\n

Join to knit in the round. Divide stitches between double pointed needles or needles for a magic loop. Divide with multiples of\u00a08 on each needle.<\/p>\n

Ribbing (6 rounds for preemie size, 8 rounds for other sizes): k2, p2 repeated across round<\/p>\n

Preemie – 6 rounds of knit
\nNewborn –\u00a08 rounds of knit
\n6 month –\u00a010 rounds of knit
\n12 month – 10 rounds of knit
\nToddler – 12 rounds of knit<\/p>\n

Track:
\nRepeat each instruction across the round:
\nChange to track color.
\nRnd 1: k
\nRnd 2: k1, kw4w, k2
\nChange to between-rail color.
\nRnd 3: k1, dws, k2
\nRnd 4: k1, spw, k2
\nRnds 5 and 6: Repeat rnd 4 two more times.
\nChange to track color.
\nRnd 7: k
\nRnd 8: k
\nChange to above track color.<\/p>\n

Knit until the hat measures the desired height for size including the ribbing:
\nPreemie – 4.5″ high
\nNewborn – 5″ high
\n6 month – 6″ high
\n12 month – 6.5″ high
\nToddler – 7″ high<\/p>\n

Crown:<\/strong>
\nRepeat across the round
\nRnd 1: k2,\u00a0 k2tog, ssk, k2

\nRnd 5: k2tog, ssk
\nCut the yarn with several inches to work with.\u00a0 With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops, secure and weave in end.<\/p>\n
