Instructions are given in several sizes. The sleepers are formed by elongated stitches that are picked up on the opposite rail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sizes:<\/strong><br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; 10&#8243; circumference, 5.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; 12&#8243; circumference, 6&#8243; high<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; 14&#8243; circumference, 7&#8243; high<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; 16&#8243; circumference, 7.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; 18&#8243; circumference, 8&#8243; high<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gauge:<\/strong><br \/>\n18 stitches and\u00a024 rows = 4 inches in stockinette<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong><br \/>\n0.7 to\u00a03 oz (40 to\u00a0150 yards) of soft worsted weight yarn<br \/>\nSize\u00a08 (5 mm) 47&#8243; circular needle (for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craftsy.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/demystifying-the-magic-loop\/\">magic loop<\/a>) <em><strong>or<\/strong><\/em> set of size\u00a08 (5 mm) double pointed needles<br \/>\nYarn needle<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least two colors are needed to make the hat, but up to four can be used. The example has three.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abbreviations:<\/strong><br \/>\nk = knit<br \/>\np = purl<br \/>\nk2tog = knit two together<br \/>\nssk = slip one knitwise, slip one knitwise, insert left needle into front of both slipped stitches and knit<br \/>\nkw4w &#8211; knit with four wraps: insert right needle to knit, but wrap yarn four times and pull through<br \/>\ndws &#8211; drop with slip: slip the stitch with the extra wraps purlwise, dropping the extra wraps. There will be a single elongated stitch.<br \/>\nspw &#8211; slip purlwise<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pattern:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Start with color for ribbing and below track.<br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; Cast on 48<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; Cast on 56<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; Cast on 64<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; Cast on 72<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; Cast on 80<\/p>\n<p>Join to knit in the round. Divide stitches between double pointed needles or needles for a magic loop. Divide with multiples of\u00a08 on each needle.<\/p>\n<p>Ribbing (6 rounds for preemie size, 8 rounds for other sizes): k2, p2 repeated across round<\/p>\n<p>Preemie &#8211; 6 rounds of knit<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211;\u00a08 rounds of knit<br \/>\n6 month &#8211;\u00a010 rounds of knit<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; 10 rounds of knit<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; 12 rounds of knit<\/p>\n<p>Track:<br \/>\nRepeat each instruction across the round:<br \/>\nChange to track color.<br \/>\nRnd 1: k<br \/>\nRnd 2: k1, kw4w, k2<br \/>\nChange to between-rail color.<br \/>\nRnd 3: k1, dws, k2<br \/>\nRnd 4: k1, spw, k2<br \/>\nRnds 5 and 6: Repeat rnd 4 two more times.<br \/>\nChange to track color.<br \/>\nRnd 7: k<br \/>\nRnd 8: k<br \/>\nChange to above track color.<\/p>\n<p>Knit until the hat measures the desired height for size including the ribbing:<br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; 4.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; 5&#8243; high<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; 6&#8243; high<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; 6.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; 7&#8243; high<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crown:<\/strong><br \/>\nRepeat across the round<br \/>\nRnd 1: k2,\u00a0 k2tog, ssk, k2<br \/>\nRnd 2: k<br \/>\nRnd 3: k1,\u00a0 k2tog, ssk, k1<br \/>\nRnd 4: k<br \/>\nRnd 5: k2tog, ssk<br \/>\nCut the yarn with several inches to work with.\u00a0 With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops, secure and weave in end.<\/p>\n<p>Edits:<br \/>\n12\/17\/2015 &#8211; replaced a broken link for Magic Loop method<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This little hat is made to coordinate with my Train Track Baby Blanket.
