Instructions are given in several sizes. The sleepers are formed by elongated stitches that are picked up on the opposite rail. This is the straight needle version of this pattern. The in-the-round version is <a href=\"http:\/\/stitcheryprojects.com\/2012\/02\/19\/train-track-baby-hat\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sizes:<\/strong><br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; 10&#8243; circumference, 5.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; 12&#8243; circumference, 6&#8243; high<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; 14&#8243; circumference, 7&#8243; high<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; 16&#8243; circumference, 7.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; 18&#8243; circumference, 8&#8243; high<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gauge:<\/strong><br \/>\n18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong><br \/>\n0.7 to 3 oz (40 to 150 yards) of soft worsted weight yarn<br \/>\nSize 8 (5 mm) knitting needles<br \/>\nYarn needle<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least two colors are needed to make the hat, but up to four can be used. The example has three.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abbreviations:<\/strong><br \/>\nk = knit<br \/>\np = purl<br \/>\nk2tog = knit two together<br \/>\nssk = slip one knitwise, slip one knitwise, insert left needle into front of both slipped stitches and knit<br \/>\npw4w &#8211; purl with four wraps: insert right needle to purl, but wrap yarn four times and pull through<br \/>\ndws &#8211; drop with slip: slip the stitch with the extra wraps purlwise, dropping the extra wraps. There will be a single elongated stitch.<br \/>\nspw &#8211; slip purlwise<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pattern:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Start with color for ribbing and below track.<br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; Cast on 49<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; Cast on 57<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; Cast on 65<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; Cast on 73<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; Cast on 81<\/p>\n<p>Ribbing (6 rows for preemie size, 8 rows for other sizes):<br \/>\nRepeat between * across the row<br \/>\nRibbing 1: * k2, p2 * k1<br \/>\nRibbing 2: p1 * k2, p2 *<br \/>\nMake these rows 3 times for preemie size, 4 times for other sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Make rows of stockinette as outlined below for the size you want. Odd rows are knit and even rows are purl.<br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; 6 rows of stockinette<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; 8 rows of stockinette<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; 10 rows of stockinette<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; 10 rows of stockinette<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; 12 rows of stockinette<\/p>\n<p>Track:<br \/>\nRepeat instruction between * across the row:<br \/>\nChange to track color.<br \/>\nRow 1: * k *<br \/>\nRow 2: p1 * p2, pw4w, p1 *<br \/>\nChange to between-rail color.<br \/>\nRow 3: * k1, dws, k2 * k1<br \/>\nRow 4: p1 * p2, spw, p1 *<br \/>\nRow 5: * k1, spw, k2 * k1<br \/>\nRow 6: p1 * p2, spw, p1 *<br \/>\nChange to track color.<br \/>\nRow 7: * k *<br \/>\nRow 8: * p *<br \/>\nChange to above track color.<\/p>\n<p>Knit stockinette (knit odd rows, purl even rows)  until the hat measures the desired height for size including the ribbing:<br \/>\nPreemie &#8211; 4.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nNewborn &#8211; 5&#8243; high<br \/>\n6 month &#8211; 6&#8243; high<br \/>\n12 month &#8211; 6.5&#8243; high<br \/>\nToddler &#8211; 7&#8243; high<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crown:<\/strong><br \/>\nRepeat between * across the round<br \/>\nRow 1: * k2,  k2tog, ssk, k2 * k1<br \/>\nRow 2: * p *<br \/>\nRow 3: * k1,  k2tog, ssk, k1 * k1<br \/>\nRow 4: * p *<br \/>\nRow 5: * k2tog, ssk * k1<br \/>\nCut the yarn with two feet to work with.
