Knitted Carnival Afghan
This pattern gives the impression of carnival tents. The example is a 32 inch square lapghan, but instructions for given for five sizes, and the pattern can be easily adjusted to make any size desired. Row is a multiple of 18 plus 3 stitches.
This example was made using Caron Simply Soft yarn, an acrylic worsted weight, and size 8 (5mm) needles.
Size: The blanket can be made any size you like. Five sizes are given in the directions.

k = knit
p = purl
k2tog = knit two together
ssk = slip one knitwise, slip one knitwise, insert left needle into front of both slipped stitches and knit.
S2KP2 – slip2 (together, knitwise), k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over
Instructions:
The number of cast on stitches should be a multiple of 18 plus 3.
Cast on these number of stitches for these widths:
32″ = 147
36″ = 165
39.75″ = 183
43.75″ = 201
47.75″ = 219
Row 1: k3, * yo, k6, S2KP2, k6, yo, k3, repeat from *
Row 2: k3, p1, (p1, k1) 6 times, * p6, (p1, k1) 6 times, repeat from * to last 5 stitches, p2, k3
Row 3: k4, yo, k5, S2KP2, k5, yo, * k5, yo, k5, S2KP2, k5, yo, repeat from * to last 4 stitches, k4
Row 4: k3, p2, (p1, k1) 2 times, p3, (k1, p1) 2 times, * p7, (p1, k1) 2 times, p3, (k1, p1) 2 times, repeat from * to last 5 stitches, p2, k3

Continue by repeating these 14 rows until desired length is reached. Pattern can be made in a single color or color changes can be made between repeats if desired.
On the last repeat, work the 13th row as follows:
Row 13: k9, yo, S2KP2, yo, * k15, yo, S2KP2, yo, repeat from * to last 9 stitches, k9
Cast off while working row 14.

I will add information to the pattern about the what I used for the example. This should work with most yarns and appropriate needles for the yarn.
The S2KP2 is explained right before the Cast on of the pattern.
S2KP2 – slip2 (together, knitwise), k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over
what does together, knitwise mean. or explain a little better, then after you do together, knitwise you pearl? thanks for your help
Insert the needle into the next two stitches as though you were going to knit them together, but instead of knitting them, just slip them to the other needle. Knit the next stitch. Pass the two slipped stitches over the just knitted stitch (as you would for a bind off). Hope that helps.

Would this make a nice baby blanket with baby/sport yarn and small circular needles? I’m always looking for new patterns for babies. If you can give me adjustments that would be great.
I think it would definitely make a nice baby blanket. With sport weight yarn and size 6 needles, I think the widths would work out approximately as follows:
Cast on 147 – 26.5″ in width
Cast on 165 – 30″ in width
Cast on 183 – 33″ in width
Cast on 201 – 36.5″ in width
Do you have difficulty with Simply Soft pilling? I’m getting really frustrated with it with my items that I knit because after a couple of uses it pills like crazy; also after it’s washed, watch out! Pills pills pills everywhere.
It does tend to pill. I wash it on the handwash setting on my machine. I crochet as well, but typically not with Simply Soft because it also tends to split.
Approximately how much yarn do you need for this afgahn? I would probably use the Caron Simply Soft. Thanks.

Hi. I just saw this from the ALL FREE KNITTING WEB SITE. I live in Durban in South Africa. I would like to say its an unusual throw. I haven’t seen any patttern like it here.I would like to say to Sue B (that its a lovely idea to give a knitted throw for a weeding gift). How much worsted weight yarn would I need to do a full sized afghan. It’s a lovely pattern and I’m anxious to try it.
For a 40″ by 50″ afghan, it would take approximately 28 ounces of yarn.
I printed the Knitted Carnival Afghan pattern but it doesn’t give the size needles to use or how much yarn to buy to make this afghan. I really like the pattern.

I used size 8 needles (5 mm). For the 32″ square lap blanket, I used close to 14 oz of yarn.

How many ounces would you suggest for a Baby afgan using size 6 needles
For a 35″ by 40″ blanket in sport weight I’d say approximately 10 oz.
I love the pattern! I’m starting a baby blanket with 4 ply yarn now. We’ll see how long it takes me and maybe this can be a hurry up project! Hope so, it seems I get invited to baby showers often since I make the gifts and am the only one with hand made items. I carry knitting with me every place I go, used to knit while my husband drove. Now I have to do the driving and it sure has cut into my knitting time.

I LOVE YOUR SITE, PATTERNS, SUGGESTIONS, ETC. my biggest problem – I knit too tight ^ even though I adjust kneedle size everything comes out short (afghams, baby blankets, etc)HELP thanks for any suggestions.
I knit a lot looser now than I did years ago. I slowed down my knitting and made a conscious effort to change my tension. After a while it became a habit.
If upping your needle size doesn’t help, I really don’t know of any other tricks than just trying to form new habits.
Interesting Afgan pattern
I am a new knitter- but think I can tackle this- my question is: Do I cast on first? I ask this because this pattern line came before the cast on! (below)

Do you ALWAYS cast on 1st? If so what is this (S2KP2 – slip2 (together, knitwise), k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over) in your pattern for before it says to cast on? Sorry- hope you understand this goofy question :0)
The S2KP2 is a special stitch that you will use later in the pattern. It is just explaining that this is the abbreviation for the stitch. You almost always have to cast on first for most patterns.
Love this pattern. Can you use it to make a shawl.How many stitches would you cast on say for 18′ or 22′ wide shawl?

Casting on 93 would result in an approximate 20″ width. So glad you like the pattern.
Very nice pattern…my thinking cap came on and I am now in the process of working with stitches to make a scarf…I am pretty sure it will turn out……here I go!!!

I have started this afghan and absolutely love it!!! I was going to give it away. But I think I will keep this one and make another to give away. This is the first afghan that I have knitted. I am a fairly new knitter. but this pattern makes you look like you are pretty experienced.

I crochet baby afghans for all the grandbabies of friends. My grandson told me at the end of my Surprise 80th Birthday party, that I am going to be a GREAT Grandma! WOW! That was almost as good as a surprise party! Maybe better!
How many stitches do you cast on for the picture you have shown? If I am right it says multiples of 18 plus 3. Does that mean only 21 stitches? What if I would like to make a full afghan how many would I cast on? Also how many different colors did you use?

Beautiful pattern by the way
I made a 32″ wide lapghan by casting 147 stitches (18×8+3). For 36″ width, cast on 165. For 40″ width, cast on 183. For 44″ width, cast on 201.
Basically, each repeat is 4 inches wide.
I used three different colors, but you can use as few or as many as you like and I think it would work out beautifully.
I just read somr of your answers to the quetions that were asked. I havent knitted an afghan in years but I was looking for a new pattern. My mm taught me how to make this afghab that is called the broomstick lace afghan.I made them fot gifts. Right now I am making on e for a christmas gift for my fruend. i have one question what does yarn over mean? That is one part of the pattern I didnt understand. I am always looking for new patterns to try. so I thought I would like to try this one. I do a lot of the broomstick lace afghans.

This is not a standard abbreviation but rather a shorthand I’m using instead of continually repeating “psso” in the pattern. I’m sorry my shorthand was confusing.
did you have tear yours out and start over? i have had to tear mine out about six times and start over

I’ll speak in terms of the needle with unknitted stitches that you are working from and the needle with finished stitches.
First insert your needle into the next two stitches as though you were going to knit them together, but instead, transfer them to your needle with finished stitches. Next, knit the next stitch. Next, using your unfinished stitch needle, take the two slipped stitches that you didn’t knit and slip them over that last knitted stitch. The result should be that the center stitch of the three involved stitches should be the one on the top.

I seen this pattern here and I said to myself I want this one. I am a 78 year old greatgrandmother of 20 and I am going to start making these for my children, my grandchildren all 12 of them. I had 7 children. enough of that. I have a question about the needles in all these patterns on this site.
Why don’t they put the US size on them with the size they now have. I don’t know the size when they don’t put US before the number. Is there a site where they give both of the sizes I don’t know what you call the other one the one they use on this site. I’m so glad you like the pattern. All the needle sizes I give are US sizes. I also give the mm sizes since those are universal and based on actual size.
I’m finishing up 74 – two children, but only one has children — they have decided to not tell me they have children.

I have started this over and over again … it just doesn’t work.. starting with line 3.. then it comes out even in other rows then its off again.. did you knit yours according to the directions you gave?? if I do (1) sequence of the 18+3 stitches its beautiful.. once I get to line 3 its off… when I did a 3 repeat.. does it even out over more repeats.. but at times it says to p3 and k3 when there are only 5 stitches left.. other times it says to k4 when there are 7 stitches left.. its just off somewhere.. does anyone else have this problem?

You gave us the pattern for the Carnival Afghan but there is no yarn yardage stated.How much yarn do we use?
My 32 inch square afghan took 600 yards. I would be happy to calculate yardage for whatever size you would like to make if you give me the size.
could you please explain row 5 . the yo, p7. DoI have to wrap the yarn around twice?
It is like that because after the yarn over you have to bring the yarn forward for the purl. The result should be just one yarn loop on top of the needle.
About Simply Soft ‘pilling’…I wrote the company and the lady who answered advised me to hand wash, do not scrub the item, but to gently twist and squueze water out, then to dry flat. I gathered it was any rough handling is what causes the yarn to pill. That’s a shame ‘cos I have some really gorgeous Simply Soft yarn I plan to use. It also is very difficult to work with if you need to undo knitting. I found it horrid for twisting itself and it can be really time consuming getting this yarn un-knitted. I do love the pattern for this afghan…wonder how it would work making it on the super large needles? (Size 50’s)
I really like this pattern. I have not knitted in years and just recently started again, by knitting my 18 day old grandson a hoodie would you believe in camo. Now I’m wanting to knit afghans one for loveseat, sofa and recliner and this one is going to be a definite make. I’m using different colors for mine. My room is in brown tones with burgandy accent. How would this pattern work with a #5 bulky yarn and #10.5-11 size needles? If possible, how many stitches to cast on for a 38-40 by 50-52 afghan and how much yarn? As usual, I have screwed up the math to a fare-thee-well.
Cast on 147 and it should work great. I can only sort of ball park yardage, but maybe 1,150 yards.

I was wondering. With the “yo”, is it your intent to increase the number of stitches? If so then just switch from knit to purl or from purl to knit without bringing the yard forward or backward and it automatically creates the “yo increase”.
I agree. When going from k to p or p to k the yo technique is different than the standard. In this case the yo indicates adding a stitch. Thanks for the clarification.
Thank you for the quick response. I just learned that my niece is having a baby in 5 months so I am working on some baby things (cocoon, blanket, mittens, booties, etc) and I thought this would make a great baby blanket.
I have started this pattern four times and it just does not come out right. I used the cast on of 201 stitches and it does not work out. Plese let me know if anyone else has this problem.
Do you have too many or too few stitches and how many? I can help if I have more information about what is happening.
I am having the same problem as Sally, just can’t get the stitches to come out right. I had the right amount of stitches (201) counted them twice.
Make sure your s2kp2 is using 3 stitches. If you tell me how it is getting off – how many stitiches more or less you have than you expect – I can better help.

The beginning should be k3, p1 so four stitches
The the repeat is 18 stitches over and over.
You should have 17 stitches left over – which I think you would if you had k3, p1 instead of k3, p3.
On that last repeat the p6 is replaced with p2, k3, so the last repeat is 17 stitches.
This is one of the earlier patterns I wrote, and it is very confusing with the replacements in the repeat at the end of each row. I have just now rewritten it so that it is more clear.

I have been looking forward to starting an afghan now that Christmas is over and I’ve decided on this pattern. It really looks beautiful. I’ve already bought my yarn. I bought Loops & Threads “Impeccable” in colors teal, rouge, and off white. I’m going to make mine a full-sized blanket and plan to start it as soon as I finish a shawl that’s 3/4 finished. Thank you. I have printed it and will make it as soon as I am finished with the baby blanket I am doing now. Pattern looks easy to do. One question, does the yarn need to be worsted or double strand baby yarn?
The gauging for the yarn requirements and sizing given in the pattern is based on worsted weight, but the pattern will work with any weight yarn. I would just recommend using the needle size recommended by the yarn and you would need to adjust your cast on accordingly.
This is such a lovely pattern! Thank you for sharing and as I am expecting my first grandchild around April I hope to have atleast , started it by then! Here in the part of India i live we dont have a great variety of yarn but I have been looking around online and hope I may be able to find something Suitable as well as affordable.
In row 7, it says to “repeat from * to the last 5 stitches, p3,k3” How can you p3,k3 into 5 stitches? This may be apparent after I actually start the project, and i apologize if this is so.

I would like to make this as a baby blanket. I am not sure what size a typical blanket would be. I have plenty of yarn — 3 skeins of one color and 2 of the other. {Red Heart Soft, 5oz, 256 yds., worsted (4)} Could you please get me started with cast on and how much I might use? It depends on its use. Swaddling and receiving blankets are usual from 30 to 36 inches square. A typical general purpose baby blanket is around 36″ by 40″. A crib blanket is about 36″ by 50″.
For these widths cast on –
32″ = 147
36″ = 165
Yards needed for these finished sizes –
32″ by 32″ – 680 yards
36″ by 36″ – 860 yards
36″ by 40″ – 956 yards
36″ by 50″ – 1195 yards

Hello!! I came across this afghan pattern because I have a love for all things carnival and thought it would be fun to knit up something that has a pattern that looks like carnival tents!
I have never made an afghan before. I am rather new to knitting. I taught myself about 3 years ago and have only made small projects or things that I just kind of make up in my head and try out. I belong to two knitting groups. The ladies I knit with have helped me IMMENSELY! They have given me nice yarns, different needles, and lots and lots of great knitting magazines! (I just graduated from college and am a self employed freelance writer so money has been awfully tight for a while!!) I have been dying to try a throw and this looks like it will be the one I try! I do wonder, though, what a good yarn would be to begin with? I am on a budget and noticed that you said this pattern would take at least two skeins. Can you give me any suggestions of very affordable yarn that will wash well and be cozy?

I will look for that type of yarn. Do you think I would find it at my local yarn shop? Or is mainly sold at Micheal’s or JoAnn’s?
Also, if I were to alternate colors, would I knit the pattern once and swap to another color and then go back and forth after each of the pattern sections? Or, do you think it would be more aesthetically pleasing to do a few sections of the pattern before swapping colors? I have never done color work before. I always either make things in one color or I use the self-striping yarn to get my projects more colorful.

I was wondering if it was possible to use circular needles with this pattern? If it is, would the size be the same, size 8?

Yes. Use a size 8 circular and just knit back and forth like on straight needles. I always make afghans on circular needles since they can be so heavy.

Made this afghan , turned out great. Thanks again for the beautiful patterns. Made it on 10 circular needle, Super Savor Yarn, larger needle made a softer feel to this yarn.
I want to make a scarf with this pattern. I would like to have the “fans”run the length. I want it about 10” wide. How many stitches would you cast on? Do you think it would look OK to bind of the “ripple” that length? Have I confused you yet?
Do you want to knit back and forth on the short width of the scarf or be knitting back and forth on the length of the scarf?
I tried making this afghan, and the pattern was working beautifully until I reached step 8, where it all fell apart, I wasn’t left with 8 extra stitches to finish the pattern, the repeat just ran out towards the end…I had tried earlier and noticed the stitches hitting inconsistent with the pattern so I stopped halfway through, undid my stitches as I assumed I’d messed up somewhere, and started over, reading and counting carefully on my second try. Same problem, and I’ve finished the row and it’s all messed up. It may be that I missed a stitch somewhere in a previous row, but since it was looking so nice I doubt it. Am I doing anything wrong? Are the instructions correct? Any advice or response would be great, as this afghan was intended to be a mother’s day present.
It sounds like row 7 came out to the correct number of stitches. I think a good way to see what is happening is to check how many stitches you have in each repeat. Here is a stitch count of row 7 and 8.
Row 7: k3, p3, yo, k3, S2KP2, k3, yo,* p9, yo, k3, S2KP2, k3, yo, repeat from * to last 6 stitches, p3, k3
Uses: 3, 3, 0, 3, 3, 3, 0,* 9, 0, 3, 3, 3, 0, * , 3 3 – for 15 before the repeat, 18 in the repeat and 6 after the repeat
Makes: 3, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1,* 9, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, * , 3, 3, – for 15 before the repeat, 18 in the repeat and 6 after the repeat
Row 8: k3, p5, k1, p3, k1, * p13, k1, p3, k1, repeat from * to last 8 stitches, p5, k3

I will be using DK yarn. What size needle do you suggest for making the small?
Whatever the yarn suggests, which is probably either 6 (4mm) or 7 (4.5mm). You might want to cast on for the next larger to get the width of the small.
I love the knitted carnival afghan pattern.
Would this design lend itself to using a variegated yarn choice?
Or am I compromising the beautiful pattern?

It would look different, of course, but I think you would still get some of the geometric design effects with a variegated yarn.
I love this pattern, I would like to make it for a full size bed which is 54×75 and I was wondering if you would know how to make this pattern bigger.

A cast on of 255 will give you that width.
I have been looking for a pattern I found in a brochure at Walmart several years ago. It had four baby afghan patterns of which one of them was called Fan and Feather. I think this brochure had two crochet and two knit patterns of which the Fan and Feather was a knit. I would appreciate any help in finding this as I like it for gifts.
My guess that it was a Leisure Arts pattern named Pretty Fans and Feathers. It was published a couple of times, once in #101, Baby Afghans to Knit and Crochet 2 in 1979 and again in Leisure Arts #3219, Our Best Knit Baby Afghans in 2000.
