August 1 – “I want a fax machine when I’m just a little bit older.”
August 3 – Daniel holding a serial cable: “This puts your blood pressure down so you will be healthy.”
August 3 – Daniel was so careful to whisper quietly to me at the library. It must have been creating a backlog of volume that needed to be used because as soon as we walked out the library door he said in a much louder voice than he ever uses “So that was fun!!”
August 5 – Daniel has a printing calculator that he uses to make “receipts”. He handed me a short one and told me to write my name on it. I did and handed it back to him. Then he handed me another one and said “Here is your receipt.”
August 8 – “I’m not a booger-booger. I am a cutie.”
August 8 – Daniel talking to Pappy on the phone. Pappy: “Did I see you at the reunion yesterday? Did you enjoy it?” Daniel: “Just a little bit but not a whole lot.” Pappy: “Have you fed the ducks lately? You need to feed the ducks a lot or they will get hungry.” Daniel: <giggle> “The ducks don’t get hungry like that.”
August 10 – “When I get on my account, I check my e-mail.”
August 11 – “I am the dentist. I’m going to make you talk funny. Do you want strawberry or bubble gum?”
August 11 – “You stay at the Super 8. I’m going to stay at the sixty-eight.”
August 12 – “It is not too hot for me today. There is a little wind and it feels good on me.” Then he took a notion and started weeding the flower beds. Here are some of the weeds he pulled up by the roots and threw on the side walk.
August 12 – “Poppy needs to be a doctor. Someday he’s gonna be a little older and he’ll be a doctor.”
August 14 – Daniel: “I made a dream about Christmas up.” Me: “What happened in your dream?” Daniel: “I got presents.” Me: “What presents did you get?” Daniel: “I got flowers and another Buzz Lightyear.””
August 15 – Daniel, pointing to a robin in the front yard: “Look at that pretty bird. He’s looking at me! He thinks I’m pretty.”
August 17 – We’ve been fooling people all over with driverless shopping carts until they notice a little blonde curly head peeping through the leg holes.
August 18 – I was singing along with music in the car when Daniel said, “You can’t sing that. Just let them do it.”
August 19 – “In a few days you will be small and I will be big and I will drive you to Wal-Mart.”
August 19 – Daniel when putting him down for his nap: “I’m going to make a dream about a birthday with Buzz Lightyear.”
August 19 – Daniel took my temperature with a toy thermometer and said it was “three hundred and sixty cents.”
August 21 – Papa and Daniel were playing McDonalds and no matter what Papa ordered, he was only being served sandwiches. Papa: “I need to talk to the manager. I have some grievances.” Daniel: “You are the grievance.”
August 21 – Daniel leaving the room: “I’m going to work. Everybody be sad and cry.”
August 23 – Putting Daniel to bed for his nap: “I’m going to make a dream about Mimi. She will like that.”
August 24 – Daniel: “Does Mr. Kevin eat food?” Me: “He eats food just like everybody else.” Daniel: “And when his back hurts he goes to Papa’s chiropractor.”
August 24 – Daniel’s bedtime parting words: “I’m going to dream about Papa and Papa is going to dream about me.”
August 28 – “Poppy is coming this afternoon. And I will say, ‘Pa, take me to Wal-Mart’ and he will do it.”
August 29 – Daniel’s last words to me when I put him in bed tonight: “I’m going to make a dream about carrots, and I’m going to eat carrots.”
August 31 – Sometimes I wonder if I should be concerned about the things that come out of Daniel’s very active imagination. This morning he was pushing one of his cars around in the grass pretending it was a lawn mower and said, “I lawn mowered Mimi. Mimi’s in pieces.”
August 31 – Daniel has come up with the cutest way of saying something is going to happen in the not immediate future. He says it will happen “after many many naps.”
